sober curious

Posted on 2019-07-132019-07-15 by Sameer Oza

I like the term.

I am going to ask my AFIB patients to be sober curious.

Sober curious as a concept started gaining popularity with the book by Ruby Warrington.

Non alcoholic drinks, raves and bars are now the in-thing.

Dry January as a concept is catching on in the US and UK. “Alcohol Change“, a nonprofit in the UK has popularized this term. There is even an app for that!

A fourth of 16-25 year olds classify themselves as non-drinkers. They are onto something.

Alcohol overuse is more common than one might think. As a clinician, I ask all my patients about their alcohol intake, since some of the most common arrhythmias that I treat – AFIB and PVC (premature ventricular contractions – skipped beats) – are triggered by alcohol. Not to say that alcohol is the only reason these happen, but it is the most common PREVENTABLE & REVERSIBLE cause of these arrhythmias.

See my previous posts about alcohol and health here.

“Drink responsibly” has a different meaning now!
