pulsed field ablation

Posted on 2019-05-172019-05-17 by Sameer Oza

The most promising AFIB ablation technology this year at HRS meeting. The field of cardiac ablation started with DC ablation, this is a refinement of the technique!

During pulsed field ablation (PFA), sub-second electric fields create microscopic pores in cell membranes – a process called electroporation. Among cell types, myocytes have among the lowest thresholds to these fields, potentially permitting preferential myocardial ablation.

The study demonstrated that:

  1. PFA can preferentially ablate myocardial tissue without affecting adjacent structures such as the esophagus or phrenic nerve
  2. Using an optimized biphasic waveform, PFA achieved durable PVI
